Day 6: Water and Hydration

Did you know that water makes up more than two thirds of our body weight? It is essential for key bodily functions, such as removing waste products in urine, digestion and temperature control. Maintaining good levels of hydration can also keep our skin healthy and help maintain focus and concentration.

How much should we drink?
We should aim to drink 2 litres of water per day, which is equivalent to 8-10 glasses. When we’re exercising or out in hot weather (not a problem at the moment!), you’ll need to drink more.

This water can come from water alone, or other drinks like fruit juice, squash, tea, coffee and milk. Be careful with fruit juices as they are often very high in sugar – we recommend having a glass of water with a slice of fruit in instead! Alcohol does not count towards your daily hydration target.

Top tip: buy a reusable water bottle and use this as your guide to how much water you’re drinking each day. If you have a 500ml bottle, you know that you’re aiming to drink 4 bottles throughout the day.
